Deuteronomy 5:6-21

⁶^(A)“‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

⁷“‘You shall have no other gods before^[a] me.

⁸“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. ⁹You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, ¹⁰but showing steadfast love to ^(B)thousands^[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

¹¹“‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

¹²“‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. ¹³Six days you shall labor and do all your work, ¹⁴but ^(C)the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, ^(D)that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. ¹⁵^(E)You shall remember that you were a slave^[c] in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there ^(F)with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

¹⁶“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, ^(G)that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

¹⁷^(H)“‘You shall not murder.^[d]

¹⁸^(I)“‘And you shall not commit adultery.

¹⁹“‘And you shall not steal.

²⁰“‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

²¹“‘And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.’

Oh, That My People Would Listen to Me

81 ^(C)Sing aloud to God our strength;
    ^(D)shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
²Raise a song; sound ^(E)the tambourine,
    ^(F)the sweet lyre with ^(G)the harp.
³Blow the trumpet at ^(H)the new moon,
    at the full moon, on our feast day.

⁴For it is a statute for Israel,
    a rule^[b] of the God of Jacob.
⁵He made it ^(I)a decree in ^(J)Joseph
    when he ^(K)went out over^[c] the land of Egypt.
^(L)I hear a language ^(M)I had not known:
⁶“I ^(N)relieved your^[d] shoulder of ^(O)the burden;
    your hands were freed from the basket.
⁷In distress you ^(P)called, and I delivered you;
    I ^(Q)answered you in the secret place of thunder;
    I ^(R)tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
⁸^(S)Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
    O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
⁹There shall be no ^(T)strange god among you;
    you shall not bow down to a ^(U)foreign god.
¹⁰^(V)I am the Lord your God,
    who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
    ^(W)Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

¹³^(E)Oh, that my people would listen to me,
    that Israel would ^(F)walk in my ways!
¹⁴I would soon subdue their enemies
    and ^(G)turn my hand against their foes.
¹⁵Those who hate the Lord would ^(H)cringe toward him,
    and their fate would last forever.
¹⁶But he would feed you^[a] with ^(I)the finest of the wheat,
    and with ^(J)honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

²³^(A)One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples ^(B)began to pluck heads of grain. ²⁴And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, ^(C)why are they doing ^(D)what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” ²⁵And he said to them, ^(E)“Have you never read ^(F)what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: ²⁶how he entered the house of God, in the time of^[a] ^(G)Abiathar the high priest, and ate ^(H)the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” ²⁷And he said to them, ^(I)“The Sabbath was made for man, ^(J)not man for the Sabbath. ²⁸So ^(K)the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
